Pittsburgh Penguins fans everywhere should be extremely nervous about wednesday's loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
After a four game winning-streak against a strong line-up of division foes, one loss is certainly an unacceptable way to begin a four game road trip to the west coast. Of particular concern is the unacceptable defensive play of Evgeni Malkin, who despite being amongst the NHL leaders in scoring, is not contributing enough to this team.
Local sportscaster Dave Gibroni of YINZERNET reached out to our blog with the following comment,
"Back in '91, '92 you had a good group of guys that really knew how to win. Dey went aht there night after night and brought home W's. Even back inna late 90's you had guys like Darius Kasparitis that really knew how to lay a hit. Geno is pretty good I guess, but I don't see enough effort ahta him dahn 'ere on the ice. Maybe if da Pens brought back Jordan Staal, we'd get some a dat Defense going up ere onna second line"
Dave's words certainly speak to those REAL Pittsburgh sports fans out there. An un-confirmed report has in fact confirmed that there are rumours surrounding Malkin's departure in exchange for, and I quote "A solid locker room presence, and another top 6 forward".
With a record like the Penguins and shaky play from Marc Andre Fleury this season, I think it's more than fair to assume that the playoffs are questionable at best. Our only recourse as fans is of course to demand the heads of management on a silver platter, and tear the whole thing down.
To add further insult to injury, the immediate firing of new GM Jim Rutherford is certainly reasonable in light of a sub-par performance of his two most recent aquistions in their first outing with the team.
Stay vigilant Pens fans. It's about time this talent-less team showed us something. Hopefully that day is nigh.
